Tip 1 - Wear UV Protection Sun Shirts:
Our iconic Blueline sun shirts have a natural SPF rating of UPF 50+, blocking 97% of the sun's harmful UVA and UVB rays. Did you know that colors can affect the way the sun is absorbed? According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, “Dark or bright colors keep UV rays from reaching your skin by absorbing them rather than allowing them to penetrate. That’s why these colors offer better protection than lighter shades.”
Tip 2 - Apply and Reapply Sunscreen
Don't get burned! Whether you are surfing, swimming or sunning, sunscreen should be applied every two hours for maximum protection! It is important to remember that sunscreens with a higher SPF can still wear off and should be applied at the same rate as a lower SPF.
Another factor to consider when choosing a sunscreen is the active ingredients! Products with Oxybenzone, Octinoxate, Butylparaben, Retinyl Palmitate, Homosalte and MANY more are known to cause coral bleaching on our Florida reefs and around the world. Luckily, reef-safe products made from minerals are readily available at Blueline Surf & Paddle Co.
Tip 3 - Wear Sunglasses:
In sunny south Florida sunglasses are a necessity for protecting yourself from, you guessed it, the sun’s harmful UV rays. When driving, boating, beaching, golfing or fishing, wearing sunglasses will make your activity much more enjoyable by removing the strain on your eyes! We carry brands made with a wide range of activities and styles in mind. Stop by the shop to find your perfect pair of shades!
Tip 4 - Seek Shade or Create your own!
The sun’s rays are at their strongest between the hours of 10 am - 2 pm. Therefore, it is recommended to reduce time spent in direct sun during this time. Unfortunately, that also happens to be prime time for a beach day! We recommend bringing a beach umbrella with you to create shade. Neso tents, Shibumis, and other traditional beach umbrellas are created with UV resistant fabric to absorb the sun's rays.
