This August, Blueline partnered with MANG for our first Mangrove Propagule Collection Contest to raise awareness of MANG and support restoration efforts for our local ecosystems. The collection goal of 15,000 propagules seemed heavy until we realized how determined our community was.
The rules for the contest were simple: don’t pull Propagules off trees, don't collect in protected areas, weigh in & drop off at Blueline, and have fun. At the end of the month, the top three collectors would receive a prize package from Blueline, MANG, and Costa.
In the weeks that followed, contestants showed up daily beaming with pride holding their propagules ready to weigh in and see how they stacked up against others. Some even started doing two drops a day to keep up with fellow collectors!
We are proud to announce that thanks to everyone who participated we achieved our goal of 15,000 propagules, totaling more than 850+ pounds. Once planted these propagules will cover an estimated 6 acres of coastal shorelines! The first-place winner collected an outstanding 273 pounds.
